Absences and Make-Up Work
***Students will get one extra day per day absent to complete make-up work.***
It is the student’s responsibility to check-in with the teacher regarding missing work that needs to be completed upon return to school and turn in the make-up work by the adjusted due date. Students will stay in at lunch when they return to go over what they missed and begin making it up.
We encourage you to schedule family vacations during school breaks, if at all possible. If this is not possible, please let me know 3 days before you leave and how many days your child will be absent. You will also need to notify the office. Typically, no work is sent home for vacations (some exceptions will be discussed on an individual basis). Students will be given time to have the skills they missed taught to them and time to complete their work.
Please send in a note or email me the day you need to take your child out of school early. I can then make sure your child has everything they need to leave and that they are ready (or close to it) when you arrive.
***Keep in mind, they still may have some work to make-up and homework may not be ready when your child leaves.***
SMALL GROUP PULLOUT INSTRUCTION
Students pulled out of the classroom for daily small group instruction are exempt from missed classwork during that time. These students will be notified on an individual basis.
When calling in your child sick, the nurses ask that you inform of any symptoms so they can track and prevent the spread of any illnesses. No work will be sent home for illness. This is a 5th grade policy. We want students to focus on rest and getting better. If a student is absent for more than 3 days, they will need a doctor's note to return to school.
If your child is injured and cannot participate in physical activities, a note from a doctor needs to be sent to school - copies are required to be given to the nurse and the P.E. department.
During the school day, students in band and orchestra attend instrument sectional lessons once a week for 30 minutes. This is a rotating schedule so students do not miss the same academic lesson each week. Students need to make-up any missed work due to sectionals by asking a peer when they return to class, so as not to disrupt the whole class. It may be necessary that they stay in at recess to finish.
